 ««« 관계부사 = (when, where, why, how)

 = 전치사 + 관계대명사= 일종의 전치사절

 

= 관계대명사가 그러듯이 형용사 역할(선행사 수식)

◀ ‘관계’, 영문법의 ‘관계’는 앞의 선행사를 수식한다는 관계!를 말함

 

장소 = where = in(at, on) + which ◀ 선행사 = 장소의 명사 place, house ..

 

 시간 = when = (at, on, in) + which ◀ 선행사 = 시간의 명사 day, AM 4:00 ..

 

 이유 = why = for (이유의 전치사) which ◀ 선행사 =이유의 명사 reason, cause ..

 

 방법 = how = in which ◀ 선행사 = 방법의 명사 way, solution ..

 

영문을 읽다가 in which 가 보이면, 순간, 독해가 턱 막히게 된다.  수없이 경험했을 일이다.  -->  즉시 ,  where   또는   how로 바꾸어 읽는다!!! ◀ 관계 부사 where인 경우가 훨씬 더 많다.

아래의 세 쌍으로 이루어진 각 문장을 살펴보자.

• 첫째, 둘째 문장들은 우리가 늘 써야 하는 올바른 표현이다.

• 그러나 셋 째 문장들(*)은 영문을 읽는 중에 만나보기 힘들다

• 결론= 관계부사 문장에서 ‘전치사를 맨뒤로 돌리는 표현’은 쓰지 말자!

 

 

 

◾ I still remember the day on which I met him first.

 

= I still remember the day when I met him first.

 

* I still remember the day which I met him first on. (X, awkward)

 (문법상 incorre′ct하고, 표현이 aw′kward하다) /ɔ́ːkwǝrd/

 나는 그를 처음 만난 그날을 여전히 기억한다.

 

 

 

◾The park is the place to which we used to go for picnics.

 

 = The park is the place where we used to go for picnics.

 * The park is the place which we used to go for picnics to.

(X, awkward) 그 공원은 우리가 늘 소풍을 가던 장소이다.

 

This is the town where I was born.

 

= This is the town in which I was born.

 * This is the town which I was born in. (X, awkward)

 

이 곳은 내가 태어난 마을이다.

 

 

 

◾She couldn't explain the reason why she was late.

 

 = She couldn't explain the reason for which she was late.

 

 * She couldn’t explain the reason which she was late for.

 (X, awkward)

   

  그녀는 자신이 늦은 이유를 설명할 수 없었다.

 

 

 

◾She showed me how to solve the math problem.

 

 = She showed me the way in which she solved the math problem.

 * She showed me the way which she solved the math problem in.

 (X, awkward)

 

 그녀는 그 수학문제를 푸는 방법을 보여주었다.
